Grooves are what put spin on the ball. A wedge that has had a few seasons of practice can have noticeably worn grooves, especially in the middle of the face, so look closely at the face in the photos.
Choose by loft. A pitching wedge is usually 44 to 48 degrees, a gap wedge 50 to 52, a sand wedge 54 to 56 and a lob wedge 58 or more. Most golfers keep a gap of 4 to 6 degrees between wedges.
What to check
- Groove wear. The most important thing to check on any wedge.
- Bounce. Higher bounce helps from soft sand and lush turf. Lower bounce suits firm ground and players who like to open the face.
- Loft. Fill the gap between your pitching wedge and your highest wedge.
- Rust. Some wedges are made without a chrome finish and are meant to rust. It does not affect performance.
