What to check when buying second hand irons
Check which clubs are in the set. A set listed as 5-PW has six clubs, from the 5-iron to the pitching wedge. 4-PW adds a 4-iron. Make sure the set covers the gaps in your bag.
Think about the type of iron as well. Cavity back and game improvement irons are more forgiving on off-centre strikes and suit most club golfers. Blades and players’ irons give better players more control but punish poor strikes.
What to check
- Shafts. Steel shafts are standard in irons. Graphite is lighter and suits slower swings. Check the flex too.
- Grooves and faces. Some wear in the middle of the face is normal, but heavily worn grooves reduce spin.
- Lie and length. Previous owners sometimes had irons bent or cut to suit them, so check the listing if you need standard specs.
- Grips. Regripping a whole set adds to the cost, so factor in worn grips.
