Choosing a second hand hybrid
Hybrids are numbered like the irons they replace. A 3-hybrid usually has around 19 to 21 degrees of loft and a 4-hybrid around 22 to 24, but it varies by brand, so check the loft rather than the number.
Most golfers carry one or two hybrids in place of their 3-iron and 4-iron. Aim for a steady gap in distance between your longest iron, your hybrids and your fairway woods.
What to check
- Loft. Compare it with the irons and fairway woods already in your bag.
- Shaft. Hybrids come with steel or graphite shafts. Graphite is lighter and suits slower swings.
- The face and sole. Wear on the sole is normal. Look for dents on the face.
- Headcover. Worth having, as hybrid heads pick up marks in the bag.
